What is Fair Trade?
Fair Trade is a business model with triple bottom line. In addtion to profits, the Fair Trade model factors in concern for workers and the environment. Fair Trade priniciples include:
1. FAIR price for products, fair wages, and safe working conditions.
2. ENVIRONMENTALLY sustainable practices.
3. COMMUNITY development with funds set aside for such projects as schools, scholarships, and clinics.
4. RIGHTS of children. No child trafficking. No forced or abusive labor.
5. GENDER equality
Fair Trade brings social and environmental responsibility to the market place. It is driven by the free choice of consumers, depends on the hard work of individuals, and is self sustaining. Fair Trade has been called capitalism with a conscience.
Given the above, it is not surprising that all major Faith groups in the United States along with environmental organizations such as Green America and the Sierra Club endorse and promote Fair Trade.
